But I feel bad not trying more to share things she really likes, so tonight I got a starter knitting kit and some yarn. The how-to for "casting on" really sucks. Wife agreed, and to make matters worse, my premotor cortex senses the size and shape of the needles and wants to hold them wrong. After snapping at her several times, I tried looking up a website for trouble with beginning knitting. I also tried to hold the needles like she showed me, but it just doesn't work (the needles slip, I can't hold the yarn, etc) but after a lot of frustration I managed to get the yarn through the slip knot hole and then was able to follow her directions about what to "do" with the yarn, putting it on the other needle, etc. But apparently it was too tight, because after doing it a couple more times I couldn't even see a space to stick the needle into. BUT, I did find a way to hold the needles that allowed me to do something other than curse in a most creative fashion. I guess now I will let her "cast on" for me so I can practice doing the basic knit stitch.
I seriously hope learning this skill is worth it. I mean, I am wanting to learn it for positive reasons but it is revealing/provoking some short-tempered/prideful resistance and antagonism. That is, I am doing it to be nice but I am acting like a jerk.
